Regular grooming sessions allow you to examine nails, teeth, ears, and eyes prone to foreign attacks. Hence it would be best to do routine checkups like a professional in your vicinity.

But how to groom like a professional? Remember that dogs are more accessible to bathe than cats and are not water-friendly, but it is not impossible. Read the steps to establish a home grooming routine with your pet.

1. Get your tools

The first step is to gather all the necessary tools for home grooming sessions. Here is a list of tools that will make your purchase easier.

● Natural shampoo and conditioner

● Sponge

● Toothbrush and toothpaste for the pet

● Nail clippers

● Nail filers

● Comb

● Brush

● Scissor

● Paper towels

● Towels

● Toys for your pet to play in the water

● Blow dryer

Remember to look for natural ingredients in all items, as many chemicals are not pet friendly and can cause skin breakouts or reactions.

2. Brush your pet

Multiple weekly brushing sessions will help you keep your pet clean and tidy, or you can do it daily. Take a brush with natural fibers and gives long strokes to dogs and cats with long fur. This action will stimulate blood circulation and remove dandruff flakes easily, if any.

You can buy long-haired pin brushes, bristle brushes, slicker brushes, or rubber curry combs to remove dead hair and polish the coat.

Remember that cats develop hairballs, so keep sessions short if the pet squirms. Also, try alternate brushes to see which one suits your pet better.

3. Clip the claws

Start by clipping the nails after brushing. You can use regular nail clippers or buy an electric nail grinder for dogs.

Cate is different, so use a cat nail trimmer. Start with familiarizing the nail trimmer to them. Make the pet touch it and get used to the sensation so that when you start trimming, the cat does not get anxious and runs away. Start clipping a little at a time and gently push down to extend the claws and nails.

4. Brush the teeth

Every pet needs a clean mouth, especially dogs, so brush their teeth regularly, but not like humans. It is the final step before bathing, so ensure everything is alright.

Start with applying toothpaste to the toothbrush. Lift one side of the jaw and brush the teeth. Clear away with the back and outer side of the jaws, and then concentrate on the front teeth. You do this when your pet is small to make a routine of the procedure.

Feline pets are not required to brush their teeth, however, you may wash inside the mouth with water only.

5. Pet bath

Fill a tub or a sink for the cat with water, and ensure the water is adjusted according to the climate and indoor temperature. For dogs, a handheld shower or a sprinkler with very well and makes bathing easy.

Wet the pet by pouring water from a cup or a shower. Make sure the fur is all wet before you apply the shampoo. Rinse it off gently and use conditioner for pets with heavy coats. Lather and massage the head and move towards the neck. Then come towards the chest, underbelly, feet, and tail. Leave the shampoo and conditioner for a few minutes before you rinse off for maximum results. Use a damp washcloth to clean around the pet's face and eyes.

Check the product to see if it is free from chemicals and artificial fragrances which can ruin the pet's fur or skin.

6. Go to the ears

As you bathe your pet, check for any soreness, redness, or discharge from the ears. It could be a sign of an infection, so check properly. Then use a mild shampoo to clean the debris and dry it with a cotton ball.

7. Blow dry and trim

Comb all the fur on your pet. Go with long strokes and use a good blow dryer. You can use your blow dryer here and set it to medium speed, and it will work just fine. Brush away sensitive areas, especially behind ears, as pets often scratch behind ears.

If the hairs are long, trim the excess away with a curved scissor. Follow the natural cut and let the clippers do their magic.

8. The final grooming

Once your pet is brushed and dried, please keep it on clean bedding. Wipe the pet's face in case any slurry slips from the mouth, and give treats as rewards.
